When you first pull up to this restaurant you may think to yourself “Why is Two Kooks sending me to this dump?”. In a bit of a run down plaza off Speers Road, Adonis is a diamond in the rough and surprisingly quite nice on the inside. Good spacing on tables, beautiful lighting hung above and plenty of natural light from the large windows. It is very sparsely decorated, but a decent looking space considering the outside appearance.
It seems that this is a family business, which I always find typically offers good food and service. Our waitress was fun and friendly and very accommodating. My dining partner was craving Adonis’ Vegetarian Cabbage Rolls (a rare find) and was nervous when we were told that there might not have been any made up that day. The waitress immediately went to check, and literally “happy danced” her way to our table with good news that it could be ordered. There was a slight mix up in the dish my friend ordered, but overall a good experience.
Great thing about Mediterranean restaurants is they usually have good platter options that give you a bit of everything. I ordered the Vegetarian Platter which included: Hummus, Baba Ghanouj, Lentil Rice, 2 Grape Leaves, 2 Falafels, Tomato Feta Salad and warm Pita Bread. Everything tasted fantastic. The Falafels had a perfect crunch on the outside and tahini sauce drizzled over them. The Lentil Rice had some amazing spices in it that brought forth a great flavour. And the dips were fresh and flavourful! My only disappointment was the salad as it was pretty basic (although the feta cheese they used was great). Overall a delicious meal that left me full and satisfied.
Most definitely this place is vegetarian friendly. They have plenty to choose from for individual items or you could be like me and get a platter that is completely vegetarian. Vegetarian Cabbage Rolls are a challenging thing to come by, so it is pretty exciting that this place offers their own vegetarian twist on a classically meat-based dish.
It is a fairly decent priced restaurant. You get a lot of quality food for a mid-price point so I felt that my $17 was well worth it.
