BOSCO IN BIANCO Pizza
Spicy Oil (on side)
In Old Montreal, the area dating back to the French colonialists in the mid-17th century, you will find plenty of cute shops, restaurants and a whole lot of charm. Amidst all the hustle and bustle of a warm evening in June (on a business trip), I found myself dining on the patio of Bevo Bar + Pizzeria Restaurant. Apart from the beautiful atmosphere, I was drawn in by the aromas wafting in the air as mouth watering pizza’s were being delivered to the tables. Magnifique!
Old Montreal, a unique and charming spot in the city, is highly worth visiting. Feeling like you are transported to a piazza in old Europe, the area is filled with lots to see, do and eat. As soon as I made my way down to this part of town I immediately stopped in my tracks at the beautiful (and crowded) patio of Bevo Bar + Pizzeria. The restaurant itself is in an old building that, while keeping it’s historic charm, has clearly transformed into a trendy eatery. The outside, however, leaves the dim sultry light behind in favour of a bright, spacious and very European style patio (spilling onto the street with some greenery marking its boundaries). I really enjoyed what they did with the space both inside and out. Great for dinner with the girls (or boys), the family or your main squeeze.
For those who don’t speak french, do not fear as all the waitstaff easily spoke English in this touristy part of town. The hostess was friendly and was able to get me a table on the patio after a short wait. My waitress was very sweet and had a nice warmth about her. While the service was quick and friendly (I appreciate that), I did quickly notice the attire of the women staff in comparison to the guys. Short…and I mean short…black dresses were clearly the dress code for the ladies and, in a stark comparison, the men staff all wore white long sleeve dress shirts and jeans. I am never a fan of a restaurant that over-sexualizes its female staff while the men are allowed to work in clothes that are clearly far more appropriate and, I would be,t easier to work in. In 2017, I would hope that this archaic practice of women’s dress code would be put to bed. At the end of the day, this is a place where I am coming to eat and enjoy the company of my fellow diners, not ogle women. I unfortunately felt compelled to take off points because of this, but it is in no way a reflection of the job done by the women!
I sat debating with myself on whether to order a cocktail or glass of wine and after looking around at the other tables, I decided to go for the wine. Did the cocktails look bad you might ask? Nope! The cocktails looked great, but the pour on the wine was generous and I was not disappointed when mine came to the table.
If the word Pizzeria is in the name of the restaurant, then in my book, pizza should be on your table. I ended up ordering the BOSCO IN BIANCO which was a white pizza (aka no tomato sauce) topped with mozzarella and various mushrooms including sliced truffles. The crust was excellent and I felt like I was eating in Italy. Lots of mushrooms – extremely generous on the truffle slices. The combination of ingredients and the quality was divine and left me completely satisfied with my choice.
I also want to call out their delicious house-made spicy oil. If you enjoy heat then be sure to ask for this as it added the perfect punch I was looking for in my pizza. It took a lot of resisting not to slip the oil into my purse!
Like most pizza restaurants, there were plenty of vegetarian options to choose from including salads, apps, pastas and pizzas. Definitely easy to find something for everyone’s taste.
While I felt the drink prices were reasonable, the rest of the prices felt a bit on the high side…but that is to be expected in the most prominent tourist part of town. Considering the vast amount of mushrooms and generous size of the truffles, the $21 cost for my pizza was actually pretty reasonable, but when I looked at the Extra Topping section of the menu I felt that some items were a bit on the high side. $3 for Arugula sprinkled on top…is it organic? Overall, the quality and quantity were great and the atmosphere and location were amazing so I am not too fussed by the price. About $36 before tip for pizza and wine.
