Buy a fresh unbaked dough at a bakery. Do the hands-on prep for 10-15 minutes, then wait for the magic that creates decadent chocolate orange cinnamon buns!
Oh, these are seriously good! If you like orange and chocolate that is. Soft doughy buns with a chocolate interior, bursting with zesty orange cinnamon glaze. These buns are a twist on our Easy Cinnamon buns (see below). They start with an unbaked dough you buy at your local bakery or grocery store – I like to use challah dough. I know, it’s cheating, but who cares? I honestly can’t tell the difference from a homemade dough.
The dough I buy rises quickly in the bag in the fridge so once I take it out of the bag, it’s ready to go. With just a few minutes of preparation, the buns are ready to do their thing. You can make them ahead and bake them the next day or later the same day. They are best served warm out of the oven (I pop them in during dinner or before brunch), but if you have to bake them ahead, just warm them in the oven for a few minutes or in the microwave for a minute.
- You can vary the intensity of orange by adding more or less zest. Same with the cinnamon.
- Add some walnuts of pecans if you like, either to the filling or to the brown sugar topping.
