Have 9 months flown by already? It seems like just yesterday that we at Two Kooks In The Kitchen were discussing layouts and direction for our new blog and now we are almost a year old. It has been an incredible journey so far and we can’t wait to find new and delicious ways to entice our readers. Please feel free to let us know if you have any feedback on how we can improve your experience with our blog.
As far as restaurants go, I have been extremely lucky to enjoy some fantastic meals at some amazing establishments all over the world this year. In this post I am calling out my top 10 favourite restaurants of 2016 to help steer you to some great restaurant experiences in 2017.
I chose these restaurants based on my own experiences and whether I would recommend them to a friend/family member or go back myself.
SO HERE WE GO…LET THE COUNTDOWN BEGIN!!
#10 – Ruby WatchCo
This restaurant offered a unique experience in terms of its ever changing seasonal menu and multiple course dining. The food was very good (more home style cooking) as was the service and the overall experience. The only big drawback to this restaurant is the price, but when you are dining at a celebrity chef’s restaurant (Lynn Crawford) that is to be expected.
#9 – 7 Enoteca Pizzeria
Located in downtown Oakville, Ontario, this restaurant offers beautiful Italian cuisine paired with great service. The attention to presentation and the quality of ingredients and cooking techniques put this restaurant in our Top 10 for the year. Make sure you order one of their pizzas made from “00” flour and cooked in a 900 degree oven.
#8 – True True
Can you tell we enjoy a good pizza :)? True True gives the power back to the patrons with a customizable dining experience that is a far step above your standard “fast food” pizza. This restaurant provides cheap and cheerful fare with a retro south beach flare. You can be as gourmet or as simple as you want without having to dish out too much dough (yes, pun intended).
#7 – Carbon Bar
Always packed with hungry after-work patrons or weekend party-ers, Carbon Bar offers clever spins on classics and clearly knows how to pair their incredible food with the trendy vibe they have managed to create. Hard to describe exactly what type of food they serve other than delicious! The K.F.C (Korean Fried Cauliflower) is the prefect way to start a fun night in Toronto.
#6 – Barsa Taberna
Move over Spain, because Toronto wants to take a stab at Spanish Tapas! From its unique cave-like atmosphere, to the seasonal menu, and the famous sangrias, Barsa offers a great dining experience and, of course, delicious food. Perfect for an evening out with a group to sample lots of different dishes.
#5 – Mengrai Thai
I will always have a special place in my heart and stomach for Mengrai Thai as my mom (Kook 1) hosted my wedding rehearsal dinner there. We try and dine there as often as we can as the food is not only authentic and deslicious, but the service is the best in the city! You always feel like you are walking into your own home, welcomed by family when you dine at Mengrai Thai.
#4 – Truffle’s Bistro
Saskatoon might not be on your foodie radar, but it should be. Truffle’s offers a local ingredient dining experience with great service to boot. And if the main course doesn’t have you swooning, dessert is sure to. Make sure you don’t miss out on this hidden gem next time you are in Saskatchewan.
#3 – Wilbur Mexicana
I love all different types of cuisines, but I have been particularly enjoying Mexican recently. Wilbur is hip, relaxed, trendy and delicious all wrapped into one. Ok, this is not your fine dining affair, but not every good restaurant boasts sharply dressed waiters and wine in a glass (they have wine in a can here). Great flavours, some fun menu options and a perfect kind of casual dining.
#2 – Island Cafe
Unfortunately this restaurant is seasonal (aka not open in the winter), but in the summer it is this restaurant’s time to shine. Set on one of Toronto’s Islands (Ward’s), the restaurant is located in a beautiful garden and serves up some delicious locally produced and sourced food. Perfect for families, a group of friends or a romantic date, the Island Cafe is sure to impress.
#1 – Lee Restaurant
There was only one restaurant that came to mind for the #1 spot in our 2016 Top 10 Restaurant list and that was Lee Restaurant. Not only is it a beautifully designed, but I still dream about the delicious Slaw and the Green Curry Lentil Gratin (which gave me shivers the first time I took a bite by the way). Each plate comes out of the kitchen like a work of art and is served with a smile. I was even lucky to get a chance to speak to Chef Susur Lee himself who was out in the dining room greeting his customers during the holiday season. If you have not made it out to this restaurant yet, be sure to make plans for the new year!
