Bright and airy with contemporary decor, Portland Variety offers a beautiful and relaxing space to dine in. In the summer they have a popular patio out front that overlooks the hustle and bustle of King St. and on the inside their numerous windows and skylight offer plenty of sunshine to their patrons. Overall well laid out and decorated. Great spot for friendly meal with friends, a casual date or working brunch.
Our waitress was extremely nice and attentive. She made sure we had a full bottle of water on the table at all times and helped us navigate through the menu. She did a great job at making us feel comfortable and also making sure we were getting our orders taken and food served in a timely manner.
As it was only mid-day, I decided to indulge in a hot chocolate (whether it is hot or cold out, I can rarely say no to a delicious chocolate beverage). It was served in a beautiful mug and had the perfect balance of milk and chocolate. There is nothing more disappointing than getting a hot chocolate that tastes only of warm milk and this one luckily did not!
As soon as I saw homemade ricotta cheese on the menu, I knew I would have to give it a try. It was served with fresh bread on the side and a sliced up peach with crushed pistachios sprinkled over top. I was a little disappointed as the cheese itself didn’t have a lot of flavour. The peach also was out of season so I felt it added nothing to the dish since it was pretty flavourless. And I am not sure if there was honey drizzled over it as it stated on the menu, but if there was, I could not taste it. So I would have said that the dish was a bit of a thumbs down, but then the hot sauce came into play! Portland Variety makes their own hot sauce and it was just as good as what the waitress touted. When I drizzled the hot sauce over the bread and cheese it took the meal to another level and I immediately began to devour every last bit. Texture of the cheese was great and I ended up enjoying it despite my not so great first impression!
They don’t have a large menu, but there are definitely plenty of vegetarian options to choose from.
Definitely a little high on price for some of their items. My friend ordered a salad that was mostly arugula (a few mushrooms in their as well), which cost $18. Found their prices to food were not as balanced as they could have been. Don’t expect to come here without paying a higher bill.
